I'm having a few difficulties getting Windows 7 or Server to recognize a Smart Card. The reader is installed properly, but each time I insert the card neither OS can find a driver for it.
I have checked with the manufacturer and there is no driver available for the card. From your description and the steps which George provided to narrow down the issue, it seems that the driver for Windows 7 is still needed. Please contact your manufacturer for help.

I have 10 different cards. Several different readers the readers are all installed properly and a writer. I insert the card, and as I insert the card, windows asks for a driver. It shows up in the device manager under other devices as "smart card" with an exclamation point.
So I doubt brand new readers different manufacturers are bad. I also cannot see how a hardware manufacturer is putting cards on the market if they are unusable due to driver issues. XP also does not find a driver. I've already tried searching windows update for a driver. Windows 7 and Server did that automatically and I also tried again doing this manually.
